When you think of the Caribbean, you will probably fantasize about the exotic women, beautiful beaches and the fruits of its labor… (Literally). Our sweet, juicy treasures are always a symbol for the Caribbean- whether it’s pineapples, coconuts, or MANGOES.
Yes. Sweet, sweet mangoes. What better time to talk about mangoes than mango month? These delectable golden fruits are one of the many jewels in our federation but did you know that there isn’t just one type of mango? (If you didn’t know just keep that thought to yourself.) There are actually over 400 different varieties of mangoes, but in St. Kitts and Nevis, these are the main ones that should be on your mind- Polly, Grafted and Nevis Mangoes.
Polly mangoes are one of the smaller mangoes and they tend to get stuck in your teeth, but does that stop us from eating them? Heavens no! For some reason, we go through the torture of pulling the remains from the crevices of our teeth because, well… they’re just that darn good!
Grafted Mangoes are much larger in size and the aromatic smell basically scents the whole room. With all of the sniffing you’ll be doing, you’ll swear you were in a Free-breeze commercial. Grafted Mangoes are also one of the messier mangoes, but that’s one of the reasons why we love them!
Even though St. Kitts has the title “Sweet Sugar City”, Kittitians themselves, along with Nevisians, swear that Nevis has THE BEST mangoes. Period. They’re just sooo sweet and juicy! However, some debate that Rosy cheek mangoes should hold the title as “The Best Mangoes” for the same reason, but these are just mere preferences. Why don’t you be the judge? Come on down to St. Kitts and Nevis and experience them all for yourself.
