Beers, Hammond and Rum in St. Kitts and Nevis

When coming to St. Kitts and Nevis one often thinks about sun, sand, sea, tropical breeze, cuisine and a few alcoholic beverages in between.

Upon your arrival in St. Kitts you immediately notice the supremacy of Carib beer advertising as it’s displayed everywhere; bars, billboards, buses and even walls. The parent company is located in Trinidad but there’s a local Carib Brewery that produces its trade name beer “Carib” as well as other bottled drinks on the island. This includes ting, shandy Carib, ginseng-up, skol and Guinness just to name a few. Beers are good and refreshing on a hot day but in St. Kitts and Nevis Rum is the word!

Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum is handcrafted on the island of St. Kitts. The distillery blends only the finest ingredients into an award- winning flavored rum they are spiced, vanilla, coconut and even coffee flavored, also available is coconut rum cream. In 2002 Zach Brinley traded his Wall Street job to become the President of the new rum company and began to market the first batch of vanilla rum which started selling the very same year. Belmont Estate coconut rum was developed by Dr Ian Sangster in his distillery in Kingston Jamaica and produced shortly before his death in 2000. Dr Sangster has shifted production to a small neighbouring island of Jamaica to St Kitts. A subtle hint of oak, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla and a well-tuned alcohol nudge. It has been referred to as candy for grownups.

Hammond (moonshine) is locally made in small pots still across the island of St. Kitts and Nevis. Now we do not have exact details on how it is made nor where to find it as it is illegal. One maybe lucky to come across someone who knows someone with the right link. Hammond is usually sold shortly after it is distilled. It is commonly drunk straight up and then chased with water or coke.

Also of interest on either islands are rum punches which you will find at local beach bars, restaurants and even hotels. The one rum punch known internationally and which probably places Nevis on the map is the infamous Killer Bee at Sunshine Beach Bar (click for directions). As we locals say all we want is Rum, Food and Wuk up! If this isn’t a reason to enjoy the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis we’re not sure what is…

Rum Bottle Tree in Old Road St. Kitts

There are quite a few tourist attractions in Old Road St. Kitts, however, the one that drew our attention was the old tree with rum bottles hanging from it. Pondering what the history behind it was, we came to find out its significance is in no history book but just something people decided to do.

After drinking a bottle of rum the bottle was tied to a string and hang from the tree. This has been going on for years.  It is now a tourist destination. This my friends is somewhat a sight to see.

Tell us more do you know anything about this Rum Bottle Tree?

Like wine it gets better every week. Start your night at the Green Flash lounge there is an oh-so-brief instant of a green flash when the sun sets. (Maybe this is how the signature rum punch was named.) Make your way downstairs and sample the mouth-watering cuisine. Dance the night away to the live band and the tracks spun by the Dj’s till dawn. This is the hot spot for locals, college students and where few guest scurry to on a Friday night for a night filled with fun and a whole lotta rum. We are all better when we’re dancing…
